Transponder Key Problems

If you are like most vehicle owners, you have probably experienced a problem or two with your vehicle acting in a way you do not expect. When you use your car key, you assume it will start your car with no problems. Unfortunately, if you have experienced getting into your car, turning your key in the slot and not having your vehicle start, you will know that things like this are bound to happen every once in a while.

Knowing what the problem is exactly can be just as frustrating as having the problem occur in the first place, but there is one major possibility. There is a little device that works with both your car’s key and the internal workings of your car. This device is known as a transponder and it serves several purposes. A transponder key, as it is most often called, could possibly be the source of your car trouble.

What a Transponder Key Does

Security is the number one reason why most cars and car keys are outfitted with some sort of transmitter system. Transmitter keys work in a way that makes it so that only one specific key is matched with the car. There is a transmitter device inside of your vehicle, as well in your key. Each device is paired to the other, so when the key comes within range of the car’s transmitter device, the systems recognize one another. This recognition then allows you to turn on your vehicle.

Not only are vehicles that have transmitter devices nearly impossible to hotwire and steal, they also prevent accidental theft. Believe it or not, there have been cases where everyday people going about their business will unlock and start vehicles that do not belong to them, but are the same make and model. This honest mistake has occurred enough times with different vehicles that it has now become mandatory for vehicle makers to install cars with transmitter device. Now, even if someone has the same type of vehicle as another individual, there is almost zero chance that their key will be able to open up the other person’s car.

Problems with Transponder Keys

Transponder keys are great for the protection and security of your vehicle. It can feel a little alarming, though, when your transponder key will not start your vehicle. This is the primary signal that you will receive when your transponder key is not working. The following are several reasons why your transponder key may not be working.

The Key is Damaged

Since your key is used every time you start and stop your car, it gets a lot of daily use. Car keys also end up in the bottom of gym backs, backpacks and bags. Being tossed around and smashed over time enough can cause the transmitter within the key to come loose. If the transponder in the key is not properly in place, it could interfere with the signal.

The Vehicle Transponder is Damaged

Similarly, if the signal within the computer system of the car is not working, it will not be able to recognize the key. Even if everything is working fine with your key, both parts must properly read in order for your vehicle to start.

When a Phone App Opens Your Apartment Door, but You Just Want a Key

 By Corina Knoll

The third floor of the warehouse on West 45th Street in Manhattan was a sprawl of rotting wood when the two artists first arrived.

Yet through the windows came north light, softened and diffused. The newlywed couple envisioned their future studios and moved in.

They put down bamboo floors, erected walls, built a kitchen and bathroom and raised two daughters in a home they have loved for over four decades.

Then a new set of digital locks that rely on a smartphone app arrived.

Now, the couple — Mary Beth McKenzie, 72, and Tony Mysak, 93 — find themselves waging a legal battle over access to their home that has raised an analog question: Do renters have the right to an old-school metal key?

A lawsuit filed in October in Housing Court in Manhattan by the couple and three other tenants of the West 45th Street building demands that the landlord give them access to all the entryways without having to use a keyless entry system.

But it also has opened a wider debate over privacy, ageism and renter’s rights that has inspired new legislation in Albany.

At the heart of the dispute is a keyless entry system designed by the company Latch that has been installed in more than 1,000 buildings across the city.

Founded in 2013, the New York-based company saw a need for tenants and landlords to share access with guests, such as visiting family members, the electrician or a delivery person.

Users download the app, create a profile and can unlock doors via their phone or a key card or by punching in a code on the device’s numeric keypad. In some cases, the mechanism is compatible with an ordinary metal key.

Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal, a Democrat who represents the Upper West Side and parts of the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood (where Ms. McKenzie and Mr. Mysak live), introduced legislation on Wednesday that would require landlords to provide a “traditional” method of entry in all areas for tenants who prefer not to use a smart access system. It also puts strict limitations on any personal data collected by Latch or any similar digital-access company.

“This is probably the wave of the future,” Ms. Rosenthal said. “And so we have to make sure as we gallop toward that brave new world that there are privacy protections and alternatives to using apps. That people who are older or disabled or have other issues are not being inconvenienced.”

Michael P. Kozek, a lawyer for the Hell’s Kitchen loft tenants, said residents had been given mechanical keys to entrances where Latch is not installed, including their individual apartment doors and side doors that access stairways. But if they want to enter the lobby that leads to the elevator and mailboxes, residents must use the keyless entry system. The tenants have been given key cards that allow them to access the system without the use of a phone.

“As a practical matter, this particular group of tenants happen to be elderly or close to elderly and they’re not really technologically savvy,” Mr. Kozek said.

What to Do if You Have Ignition Cylinder Problems

If you are like most Americans, you likely spend a good majority of your time in your car. Whether you are commuting to and from work or rushing your children off to school and other activities, there is no doubt that you and your family rely heavily on your car on a daily basis. When a problem comes up with our cars, sometimes it can be difficult to accurately identify the source of the problem. This is especially true if you may be unfamiliar with the various parts of your car and how they work.

One common problem for vehicle owners that can be distressing and inconvenient is a worn out or broken ignition cylinder. Your ignition cylinder is mostly hidden and involves the slot for your car key, along with the inner mechanism, or cylinder that helps turn your car on. Using your ignition cylinder happens any time you turn the car on and off. Ignition cylinder problems are common for this reason due to the daily use. There are several indicators you can looks for and a few signs to be aware of that may signal there is a problem with your ignition cylinder. Below you will find the most common signs that your ignition cylinder is worn out, broken, or needs to be replaced.

You Cannot Get Your Car to Turn On

There are a couple of reasons why your car may not turn on when you insert and twist your key. You might be thinking there is an issue with your car battery or some other problem, for example. However, this is actually one of the most common symptoms of a faulty ignition cylinder. Sometimes, if your ignition cylinder has been worn down, your key will not be effective. Ignition cylinders are used every time you turn on your car. So before you assume that there may be a bigger problem with your vehicle, such as a dead or worn battery, consider that your ignition cylinder takes a lot of wear and tear and it is common to need to replace them.

You Cannot Turn on the Interior Lights or Electrical System

Usually with one turn of your key in the ignition cylinder, you are able to power on the interior electrical panels in your car without necessarily turning on the engine. If you find that when you attempt to start your car that you are not even able to get past one turn of your key and light up your dashboard, then it is possible your ignition cylinder is to blame. Similarly to when your car will not start at all, not being able to have any power come on at all may signal that your ignition cylinder is not working.

Your Key Will Not Enter the Slot or Cylinder

Let’s say you try to insert your key into your ignition cylinder and you find yourself unable to. This may mean that there is something blocking the slot in the cylinder. It could also be that one of the smaller parts within the ignition cylinder has come loose and is preventing the cylinder from working properly with the key. Check to see if you can visibly see anything blocking the cylinder entrance. Whether or not you can determine if there is some sort of block, do not try to force your key into the cylinder. This could cause unnecessary damage to your car and ignition cylinder.
