Slide locks hold the door in place and prevent them from sliding or being pulled up. They are placed on the inside of your garage near the top of the door. You would not want to place a slide like on an automatic garage door opener, since you may forget the slide lock is in place and start the motor, potentially causing it to burn out.

A t-handle lock is also very common. This type of lock is on the outside of the garage placed near the bottom. These kinds of locks should also not be placed on automatic garage doors, since they may damage the garage door motor.

For automatic garage doors, the ideal choice would be an electronic lock. These types of locks work with the garage motor, so there is no risk of burning out the motor or some other malfunction. Some electronic garage door lock models allow you to lock or unlock your garage wirelessly, from anywhere. Depending on what model you choose, these and other features can help make life a lot easier.

Other Garage Door Security Tips

Always Lock the Garage Entry Door

Regardless if you have an attached garage or a detached one, always be sure to lock the access door. This may be the door that leads from the garage directly into your home, such as with an attached garage, or the door to the side of a detached garage. Most of these doors have deadbolt locks installed, but if for some reason yours does not, it is recommended that a deadbolt lock is installed immediately. Just a simple knob lock may not be enough to stop intruders from entering your garage or accessing your home through your garage door. Make it a habit to make sure your garage entry door is locked, in addition to the garage door itself for the best possible security.
